Lent Journal – Day 2

Spent tea lights
‘Flowers’ and the beginnings of a new candle

Repentance begins with the decision to return to relationship…to choose to live in a way which gives life to all…in community – local and global. This Lent in the Marden Vale Team we are continuing to reflect on environmental matters and how we can respond. One of the things I mentioned at the Ash Wednesday service was “a firm intention of amendment”. As I opened up the church the other day and refreshed the candles where people come to pray I realised that the spent tea lights were going in the bin. Of course, the metal casing should be recycled, as well as the wax. How thoughtless of me! So here is a firm intention of amendment. I am separating the casing from any residue of wax, pressing the metal into ‘flower’ shapes(!) and saving the wax to make a candle, to create an Easter collage. After Easter the metal will be recycled. And spent tea lights will continue to be recycled rather than binned. A small act, but we can all start somewhere.
